So the news about crop loan waiver is finally here, but with a big catch . announcement is on hold, and farmers have to wait even longer.
And the reason is purely political,it seems . Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis explained that because of directives from Election Commission, they just cannot make any official announcement right now .
He was speaking to media after a Cabinet meeting, with ministers Girish Mahajan and Shivendraraje Bhosale also present . He said whole thing will only be announced after the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections which are on June 18 . And results are expected by June 22 only.
And honestly, this is where things get uncomfortable for so many people waiting for this relief. The proposal has been approved by Election Commission, but the government is literally banned from talking about it publicly .
This whole thing is happening after Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne also suggested that final decision was coming soon . Seems like "soon" has a different meaning in politics.
Few key things to know about this whole situation:
- The Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar Debt Waiver Scheme promises relief up to ₹200,000.
- Farmer suicides in the state are rising because of huge debt and no guaranteed prices.
- A committee led by Pravin Pardeshi had already submitted its recommendations for this.
The scheme itself sounds good on paper ah . It's for farmers whose loans are overdue as of September 30,2025 . If someone has a loan over ₹200,000,they have to pay extra amount first to get waiver . There is also a ₹50,000 incentive for farmers who repay loans regularly, which is nice touch.
But the timing is everything . Maharashtra is facing warnings of deficient rainfall and even drought this year . With around 52,80,000 farmers who have defaulted on loans, this waiver is not just a promise,it's urgent need.
This was a big promise during the 2024 Assembly elections,so the government is obviously under pressure to deliver . But this delay is not helping anyone rn.
So now everyone just has to wait until after June 22 . For lakhs of farmers, every single day matters… you just hope help doesn't come too late.
