So Maharashtra Cabinet just gave green light to some massive road improvement schemes . And the total amount is just huge,₹24,884 crore.
This decision came on June 2,led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . Apparently the Public Works Department will be executing all these projects to completely overhaul the state's transport network .
And where is all this money coming from? Public Works Minister Shivendra Raje Bhosale confirmed that funding would be secured through international financial institutions . A very big chunk is from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB),which is providing $1,000 million, that's roughly ₹8,700 crore .
This AIIB money will come in two stages . For first phase,AIIB will give $500 million, and state government is putting in $215 million as its own share. Not a small amount ah.
Few key things from this whole plan:
- Focus is on Growth Corridors, routes with over 5,000 passenger car units
- About 750 km of roads will be built using EPC model through open tendering
- A similar funding structure has been approved with NDB for more road works
And tbh, this whole infrastructure push is part of the state’s big vision of becoming a $1 trillion economy . They are specifically targeting routes where commercial traffic is more than 40% of total volume. Makes sense only, focus on the busiest routes first to help with logistics and reduce travel time for heavy vehicles .
Interestingly,Minister Bhosale said State Government will cover the costs first and later get reimbursed by the lenders . This arrangement means work on 750 km of roads can begin immediately.
Shivendra Raje Bhosale also said,"This decision marks a major milestone for state's infrastructure, making roads safer and better equipped for heavy traffic."
And honestly,it’s not just about better roads for cars . The government is looking at this as something that will boost industrial, agricultural, and tourism sectors too.
Big promises and big money . But the real test is always in the execution on the ground,no? Hope this whole thing doesn't get stuck in delays and actually finishes on time…
