Finally, some big move on Delhi-NCR pollution ah. The Union Cabinet just sanctioned a massive scheme worth ₹9,585 crore . And it's all focused on getting old polluting trucks and buses off the roads.
This whole initiative, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,is basically to encourage people to replace their old vehicles with cleaner ones . Either BS-VI compliant or full electric vehicles.
And they are putting serious money behind this plan . The Central Government is giving ₹5,041 crore, and on top of that, state governments will give tax concessions of about ₹1,601 crore . This is not a small amount.
Apparently the scheme is set to benefit around 2.07 lakh vehicle owners in the whole Delhi-NCR area . So that covers Delhi,Haryana,Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The target is anyone operating vehicles that are BS-IV or older.
But there are some strict rules . If you own a BS-III or older vehicle, you must scrap it at one of designated facilities . For BS-IV vehicles, you get a choice to either scrap it or you can sell it outside NCR region.
And tbh, this is the part that will actually force the change . No more running old vehicles in NCR at all.
To help people make switch, government is offering few things:
- There is a 5% interest subsidy on loans for five years.
- They will also issue monthly fuel vouchers worth up to ₹4,800 based on vehicle category.
- State governments will also waive registration fees and give tax concessions for new vehicles.
The whole thing is going to be managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas . And they say the process will be fully digital to keep it running smoothly .
The main goal is to hopefully see a real drop in vehicular emissions over next five years and maybe we can breathe a little easier in Delhi-NCR,especially during those horrible winters . It’s proactive step at least.
A scheme this big always looks good on paper, but the real test is implementation on ground . The money is huge, the plan seems solid… but will it be enough to convince over two lakh owners to go through the process… who knows.
