Maharashtra Legislature’s Monsoon Session started in Mumbai today and honestly, mood already looks heated . This is not one of those routine sessions where leaders just argue for camera and move on. Drought fear, farmer distress, loan waiver, hooch tragedy, reservation issue… everything has landed together.
And biggest pressure point rn is delayed monsoon . Rainfall levels are significantly below expectations and that is not small thing ah,especially in Maharashtra where water scarcity becomes real problem very fast once rains fail.
Opposition is clearly preparing to corner ruling Mahayuti government on this . Their main argument seems simple: if drought-like conditions are building, government should act immediately instead of waiting till situation becomes worse.
One major debate will be around Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Shetkari Karjmukti Yojana, loan waiver scheme announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . Scheme aims to reduce farmer debt up to ₹2 lakh, but opposition is not happy with conditions attached to it .
They are asking for blanket waiver instead . And tbh, this is where politics and farmer pain are going to clash badly inside House.
Few things standing out in this session:
- Delayed rains have increased fears of water scarcity across Maharashtra.
- Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Shetkari Karjmukti Yojana is being questioned because of restrictive conditions .
- Coaching Classes Regulation Bill may come up and could change educational standards .
But session is not only about agriculture . Pimpri-Chinchwad hooch tragedy will also come up strongly after 22 people died due to spurious liquor consumption . This has again raised uncomfortable questions about illegal liquor trade and how much Home Department was actually watching.
Another tense issue is government’s proposal to sub-categorize Scheduled Caste reservations without disclosing findings of Badr Committee . That can easily trigger protests both inside legislature and outside also, because reservation matters always carry huge emotional and political weight.
Government will also present supplementary demands for financial year 2026-27,with expected provisions for funding loan waiver scheme . Lawmakers are expecting discussion on these demands on June 29 and 30 . On top of that, election for Deputy Chairperson of Maharashtra Legislative Council is also on agenda, with speculation around Dr Neelam Gorhe’s possible reappointment.
So yes, this Monsoon Session has started with too many pressure points at same time . Farmers waiting, opposition ready, government defending, people watching… and question is whether anything solid comes out of this noise or it just becomes another loud political round…
