So it looks like these India-US trade discussions are really heating up now . Commerce Ministry confirmed on June 3,2026 that talks about this whole Section 301 thing are going on in big way.
And what is this Section 301 ah? Apparently it’s an investigation by the US Trade Representative (USTR) into trade practices of 60 different economies,and India is on that list . They are talking about putting more tariffs on things we send them,which could really mess with business.
Honestly,this is the kind of news that makes you bit nervous . One minute things are fine,next minute there's threat of new tariffs.
But it’s not all bad news . At same time,India is also trying to get a proper framework agreement for bilateral trade sorted out . This was something both countries had committed to back in a joint statement on February 7,2026.
And there are some specific details coming out . The proposed tariffs under Section 301 would not apply to some products already covered by Section 232 tariffs . Also,it seems there's a special plan for textiles and apparel that might allow for lower tariff rates on some imports,which is interesting.
Few things to keep in mind right now:
- Public hearings are scheduled,so stakeholders can give their comments until July 6,2026.
- An interim trade agreement is being worked on to reduce some tariffs and get more market access .
- Senior officials from both countries are in New Delhi for these talks rn.
And tbh,it’s good that they are having public hearings . These will happen on July 7,2026 and it gives people chance to actually say something before USTR makes final decision.
Even the US Ambassador to India,Sergio Gor,is sounding quite positive about it all . He’s talking about how important it is to finish the details of a new bilateral trade agreement.
The main goal for everyone is to get more market access,bring down trade barriers,and just make things more stable for businesses on both sides . That's dream anyway .
But all this negotiation and high-level talk is one thing . You just have to wonder when it will actually result in solid deal that helps people on ground… for now,we just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
