Wow,this whole thing between Indian government and Bloomberg is getting pretty serious ah. Govt has come out and flatly rejected one Bloomberg story about RBI's gold reserves, calling it straight up "fake" .
The report from Bloomberg Economics was claiming that RBI had sold a huge amount of gold, something like $12 billion worth . And the reason they gave was all the geopolitical tension happening with Iran-US conflict.
But the government's fact-checking unit, the PIB one, just shut it down completely . They said the claim is not supported by any official data and is basically unsubstantiated.
And this is where it gets interesting, because they provided numbers to back their side . According to PIB,RBI data shows the share of gold in India's forex reserves has actually been increasing for some time . It went from 13.92% in September 2025 to 16.70% by March 31,2026,and then even higher to 16.85% by May 22, 2026.
So numbers are going up,not down .
The PIB also said that RBI regularly publishes its physical gold holdings in its Monthly Bulletin, and those figures are unchanged . They are basically saying data is out there for everyone to see .
Few key points in this whole back-and-forth:
- Bloomberg's claim was that RBI sold almost $12 billion in gold by May 22 .
- Government's data shows gold share in forex reserves actually went up to 16.85%.
- The official response from PIB was very direct, labelling news "fake".
Bloomberg's report also mentioned that while selling gold,RBI was buying about $7.5 billion in foreign-currency assets . But the government is just dismissing this whole interpretation and telling people to trust verified RBI data only .
And honestly,in these times of geopolitical stress, this kind of news can cause a lot of panic . The government is obviously trying to reassure everyone about financial stability and that everything is under control.
So now you have one major international news agency saying one thing, and the country's government saying complete opposite with official data… makes you wonder what's really going on behind the scenes.
