So Election Commission of India is holding one big international conference in New Delhi, and honestly,it seems like they are finally trying to catch up with all the digital chaos happening during elections.
The conference is called “Global Best Practices and Innovations for Media in Electoral Processes and Campaigns” . It started on June 3,2026,and will go on till June 4. They have lot of people there, over 480 participants including election officials, academics and media experts.
And tbh,the main focus is on misinformation, which is biggest headache for everyone rn .
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar also spoke about it . He said, "The confidence of voters in electoral process was reflected in the record participation witnessed during the recently concluded Assembly elections." Which is good to hear, but confidence is very fragile thing ah,especially with all the fake news flying around.
The whole thing is about tackling some very serious issues .
- Focus on misinformation — How to deal with all the false information spreading online.
- AI-generated threats — Experts will be talking about deepfakes and their impact .
- Global collaboration — They want to document best practices from around the world .
And it’s not just about fake news . They are also discussing how to make digital platforms accountable during campaigns and the need for transparent political advertising online . These are huge topics.
This conference is being organized by Office of Chief Electoral Officer,Delhi, along with India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) and Delhi Technological University (DTU) . It's all part of India’s 2026 chairmanship of International IDEA .
But all these discussions are one thing . Actually stopping a deepfake video from going viral just before voting day is completely different challenge .
The recommendations from this will apparently go into report under the Delhi Declaration . It all sounds very official and important.
Let’s hope some real, practical solutions come out of this meeting . Because talking is easy, but implementing these things on ground level, especially in country as big as India… that's where the real test is…
