Finally, some good news coming out of Secunderabad . The Cantonment Board has decided to rename 21 roads and three bazaars, and tbh,it feels like a move that was long overdue.
They are getting rid of all those old colonial-era names and replacing them with names of our own war heroes and national icons . This decision was apparently made in a board meeting on June 17,2026 .
And it’s about time ah. We will now have streets named after people like Captain Vikram Batra,Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam . Imagine walking down a road named after these legends.
For example,Bolton Road is going to be renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Road . And Noble Road will become A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road. This is not some small change,it’s proper overhaul.
And honestly, this is where things feel right for once.
The whole plan is to get this done within a month . The SCB Chief Executive Officer,Arvind Kumar Dwivedi, said the proposals got unanimous approval. He said it’s important for fostering a sense of identity and respect for our heroes .
Few things standing out clearly in this decision:
- Main focus is honouring war heroes who made ultimate sacrifice, like Lt . Col. A.B. Tarapore and Havildar Abdul Hamid .
- Even bazaars are being renamed, like Bearers Lines which will now be Kartavya Nagar.
- Local residents are reportedly very supportive of this step to reclaim history.
But it’s more than just changing signboards only . The idea is to inspire pride and remind younger generations about the people who actually built this nation.
By replacing these old names, the board is trying to make a statement about Indian identity and heritage . And it seems to be part of a bigger effort to get the community involved in recognizing its own history .
Makes you wonder how many other cities are still holding on to these old colonial names everywhere… maybe this will start a trend…
