Just read about sentencing for those Cardiff riots from last year and it's a lot to take in . Thirty people have been sentenced for the violence that happened back in May 2023 .
And whole thing started from such tragedy. Two young teenagers,Kyrees Sullivan who was 16,and Harvey Evans who was 15,died in an e-bike crash . That's the heart of this entire situation .
But after their deaths,things spiraled very fast. A big crowd,maybe 150 people,gathered and started blaming the police for the boys' deaths because officers were present just before the accident happened. anger just boiled over.
And tbh,that's when the grief turned into something else. The crowd's outrage led to serious vandalism and violence aimed directly at the police officers on scene . It became proper chaos.
During court hearings,the judge shared some really alarming details from that night . One defendant was even involved in making petrol bombs which were then used against police. One officer got severe burns from this. Not a small thing ah.
So now,out of thirty people charged,26 have been given custodial sentences . other four were minors,so they got community service. jail terms are quite long,ranging from three years and eight months all the way up to six years and nine months.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:

One of the last defendants to be sentenced,Lee-Martin McQuade,got six years and four months in prison . The court said he was actively inciting more violence against the police,even shouting abuse during the whole thing. judge did mention that his sentence was reduced because he pleaded guilty early.
And even now,the community's pain is so visible . Many people who came to support were wearing turquoise shirts with the faces of two dead teenagers printed on them . That image is just heartbreaking.
It’s just a very difficult situation all around . You have this immense community grief,and then this explosion of anger,and now these long prison sentences… how does a place even begin to heal from all that…
