Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated INS Dunagiri,INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray on June 22, 2026 at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, and it is not small thing ah.
These are not just ceremonial additions to Indian Navy . Each vessel has its own role, from combat to survey work to anti-submarine operations . And when three different types of ships are commissioned together,it does show how seriously India is looking at maritime side now.
INS Dunagiri is being described as stealth frigate with cutting-edge weapons and sensor systems, including the BrahMos missile . That part itself will catch attention because BrahMos is always seen as strong signal in naval capability discussion.
Few key things standing out here:
- INS Dunagiri is a stealth frigate equipped with cutting-edge weapons and sensor systems, including the BrahMos missile .
- INS Sanshodhak is the fourth Survey Vessel (Large),built for coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys with advanced systems for data collection.
- INS Agray is Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare vessel, made for detecting underwater threats .
And tbh,the bigger point Modi tried to push was not just about these ships, but about India not wanting to stay dependent on foreign defense platforms forever . He said,"Today, India no longer wants to remain mere buyer in the defense sector... Our military power cannot become market for the world."
That line is quite direct only . Basically message is that India wants to build more at home, control more of its defense future, and not remain just buyer in global arms market . Whether this speed can be maintained is another question, but intention is being shown loudly.
The event also had West Bengal Governor RN Ravi,Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan present . So clearly,it was projected as one big national defense moment, not just normal port ceremony.
Modi also connected this to India’s wider maritime journey and mentioned indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant . Then he said,"INS Agray,INS Dunagiri, and INS Sanshodhak are giving new impetus to that journey."
And that is where this whole thing becomes more than ship launch only . India is clearly trying to show that sea power,self-reliance,and defense manufacturing are now linked together in one big story… but how far this story can actually go from here is still open…
