This is actually big news for St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University) in Mangaluru, and not just normal campus announcement type news . On June 22 , 2026,university got Category-I status under University Grants Commission's (UGC) Graded Autonomy Regulations, and honestly, that is not small thing ah .
What makes this stand out more is number behind it . Out of 157 deemed universities across India, only 26 have received this honour . So St. Aloysius entering that list puts it among very select higher educational institutions in country.
Vice-Chancellor Praveen Martis announced news and linked it with university's focus on academic excellence . And yes, these words are used often in education announcements, but here there is actual backing also.
University already holds NAAC A++ Grade with CGPA of 3.67 on a four-point scale . That kind of score does not come easily, and Category-I status is given after quality assessment and accreditation process . So this is not some casual label.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Category-I status achieved — places St. Aloysius among elite universities in India
- Enhanced academic autonomy — allows for rapid response to industry and societal needs
- International recruitment flexibility — enables hiring of foreign faculty to enrich educational experience
And tbh, biggest change here seems to be freedom . With this recognition,St. Aloysius can introduce new programs and innovative courses without waiting for prior UGC approval . For students, this can mean courses coming faster when industry or society actually needs them .
University can also start new academic departments, interdisciplinary programs and research initiatives more effectively now . It can establish research parks and incubation centers too, which could help innovation and entrepreneurship on campus instead of keeping them only as brochure words.
Another important angle is international reach . St. Aloysius can attract international students by allowing admissions beyond approved domestic intake, and it can also form academic collaborations with leading international institutions without prior UGC approval,as long as they meet specific global ranking criteria.
That could open doors for joint research projects, faculty exchanges and dual-degree programs . Plus, its approach aligning with National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) means skill-based programs can be shaped around market demands.
But now real question starts only . With this much autonomy and freedom, how fast will St. Aloysius actually convert this recognition into visible benefits for students, researchers and faculty…
