This Karnataka theatre name-change issue may look small from outside, but for people connected to Yakshagana,it clearly feels much bigger than just changing board name . And honestly,V . Sunil Kumar has reacted very sharply to it.
V. Sunil Kumar, the Karkala MLA and former Minister for Kannada and Culture, voiced his strong disapproval on June 22,2026 over Karnataka government's decision to rename Yaksha Rangayana as Karavali Rangayana . He called decision unilateral, irresponsible and insulting to Yakshagana tradition.
And this is not some random cultural centre ah . Yaksha Rangayana was established during BJP-led government when Kumar was in office, and idea was to preserve and promote Yakshagana art form for future generations.
Kumar's point is that removing Yaksha from name is not harmless or cosmetic . According to him, this hurts thousands of artists who depend on this art for livelihood and it also weakens cultural identity of coastal region.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Yakshagana is deeply linked with cultural identity of coastal belt of Karnataka.
- Approximately ₹2 crore was allocated for development of Yaksha Rangayana .
- Kumar has urged government to restore original name Yaksha Rangayana .
And tbh, this is where matter becomes emotional also . Kumar asked who exactly benefits from erasing Yakshagana identity from cultural space, and he also criticised government for not consulting local representatives before taking decision .
His strongest line was this: “Yakshagana is not just a performing art; it is a cultural identity that flows in blood of the people of the coastal region.” That one sentence explains why reaction is so intense among people who see Yakshagana as more than stage performance only.
Kumar also claimed this move is part of broader conspiracy to undermine Yakshagana tradition . He warned that if original name is not restored, there could be strong opposition from Yakshagana enthusiasts, artists and cultural figures in region .
But bigger question is still hanging there . Was this just administrative renaming,or did government badly misread emotional weight attached to Yaksha Rangayana…
