One documentary screening at 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) has now started lot of discussion, and honestly, this is not small subject ah . Demography is Destiny is dealing with India's changing population patterns, especially declining share of Hindu population, and that itself makes topic sensitive .
The screening happened in Mumbai on significant day and got attention from Maharashtra ministers Ashish Shelar and Mangal Prabhat Lodha . MIFF is organized by National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and it is known as South Asia's oldest and largest festival dedicated to non-feature films.
The documentary is directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, who is known for his previous work on Kerala Story 2 . This film is trying to connect demographic changes with electoral politics, cultural identity and social character of India . Big topic, not something people will casually agree on over tea .
And tbh, this is where discussion becomes uncomfortable.
The film reportedly uses historical census data to look at changes in India's religious composition over long period . It also talks about fertility rates, migration patterns and family structures, and how all these things can affect future politics and society.
Few things standing out clearly from documentary:
- Historical census data analyzed to trace changes in India's religious composition.
- Impact on policy discussions highlighted for future policy-making.
- Expert insights featured from scholars and public intellectuals .
Core argument of Demography is Destiny seems simple but heavy: long-term population changes should not be ignored, and they deserve serious public discourse and policy consideration . Whether people agree or disagree with framing, subject is clearly going to create debate.
During screening,Kamakhya Narayan Singh said demographic changes shape nations and their cultural, social and political developments over time . He also said documentary is meant to push serious debate around India's changing population patterns.
Minister Ashish Shelar praised filmmakers for highlighting national issues through their work, while Mangal Prabhat Lodha spoke about deep impact demographic trends can have on country's direction . film also features Padma Shri awardee Dr. Jitendra Bajaj and Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit.
And honestly, this kind of subject will not stay limited to film festival audience only . It will move into politics, policy circles, social media arguments and probably dinner table fights also… because when demography, identity and future of country come together, simple answers are rarely simple…
