Karachi Sanitation Crisis Deepens as Waste Piles Up Post-Eid

Karachi is grappling with a massive sanitation and water crisis one week after Eidul Azha. Animal remains and household garbage remain uncollected in numerous neighborhoods, leading to fears of disease outbreaks. Simultaneously, power failures at key pumping stations have triggered a water shortfall of 85 million gallons per day. Residents are now forced to rely on expensive private water tankers as the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and K-Electric struggle to restore basic services.

Key Takeaways

  • Karachi faces disease risks from uncollected animal waste
  • Water shortfall hits 85 million gallons daily in the city
  • Residents forced to pay double for private water tankers

Just reading about situation in Karachi and honestly,it's just heartbreaking. Seven days have passed since Eidul Azha and people are living with streets full of animal remains and garbage.

Reports are saying the stench is unbearable because there's no lime treatment or disinfectant spraying happening . This is not small thing ah,it's creating a serious risk of viral outbreaks in Sindh capital.

And it’s not just one or two places. Areas like Liaquatabad,Gulshan-e-Iqbal,and North Karachi are apparently buried under mountains of garbage. In one area,Pir Colony, they made a dumping site for sacrificial animals on a main road only, and now it's overflowing with normal household trash also.

And tbh, this is where the problem becomes a complete nightmare for residents .

On top of all this filth, there is now a severe water scarcity that has entered its third day . The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has confirmed that fault in K-Electric's main cable has shut down key pumping stations. This means city is facing shortage of 85 million gallons of water every day.

Few things standing out clearly in this whole mess:

  • Waste management failure — SSWMB staff were reportedly absent during the initial 48 hours of the festival
  • Pumping stations offline — Power faults at Dhabeji Grid have knocked out 10 of 21 active units
  • Economic burden on citizens — Private water tanker prices have doubled due to the ongoing shortage

So people are forced to buy water from private tankers, but even that is difficult . Prices have doubled, and some families are waiting up to 10 days just for one delivery.

One report in Dawn noted that "The power suspension has escalated a crisis that was already brewing for two months" . So this is not a sudden problem,it has been building for long time .

With the temperatures rising,I can't even imagine misery. No water, dirty surroundings, and a constant health threat…

How are people expected to cope in such conditions… just feels like a total system failure…
