Just saw this story coming out of Bangladesh and it is seriously so troubling . A journalist,Kabir Hossain,was brutally attacked with sharp weapons inside a shrine premises in Munshiganj on June 3,2026 . Inside a shrine ah,that’s what makes it even worse.
The whole thing happened at Lalon shrine in Dosharpara village . Reports say this was not random attack,but linked to some long-standing land dispute with a local political leader named Jahangir Madbar.
And apparently,this Jahangir Madbar and his group just stormed shrine and went after Hossain . Eyewitnesses described a really chaotic scene . It’s horrible to even imagine. His brother,Takbir Baul,also got hurt in this attack .
Following assault,local people rushed both brothers to Sirajdikhan Upazila Health Complex,and later they had to be moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for more serious treatment .
Few key points from this whole mess:
- motive is being linked to one dispute over land related to the shrine itself.
- Police have acted and arrested Jahangir Madbar,but are still looking for others involved .
- Hossain said he was facing threats for long time before this attack.
And this is where it gets even more direct . From his hospital bed only,Hossain gave a statement. He said he was getting threats for last six months to get him removed from his position at the shrine. He said,"Today, Jahangir,the BNP ward president, came to the shrine with several people and attacked us. I suffered serious head injuries after being struck with a machete.”
Honestly,this is not just one isolated incident of land dispute turning violent . It's part of a much bigger,scarier trend of violence against journalists in Bangladesh,which seems to be getting worse in current political climate .
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also responded to this . They are urging Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to actually follow through on his promise to protect media freedom. They are demanding accountability for these attacks.
But will anything really change on ground . This attack highlights just how dangerous it is for journalists there rn. They are literally putting their lives on the line to do their jobs.
And you have to wonder,if a person can be attacked like this inside a place of worship over a dispute,what kind of safety is there for anyone…
