Just saw this news coming from Bangladesh about journalist being attacked, and honestly,it’s very troubling to read . violence against media people seems to be getting worse.
The incident happened on June 3 where journalist Kabir Hossain was badly injured during attack at Lalon shrine in Munshiganj . He's not just a photographer for Prothom Alo,he's also the shrine's president, which seems to be part of the problem .
Apparently, the whole thing is connected to some ongoing land dispute at shrine itself . Witnesses say a group led by Jahangir Madbar, who is a local leader from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP),came and assaulted Hossain with sharp weapons .
And tbh, this is where it gets very scary . A land dispute is one thing, but attacking someone with weapons is something else entirely.
During the attack,Hossain's brother,Takbir Baul, also got hurt when he tried to help him . Both of them were rushed to Sirajdikhan Upazila Health Complex and then moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for more treatment.
What’s even more disturbing is that Hossain said he had been getting threats for the past six months . So this wasn't just a sudden fight,it was building up for long time.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- The attack stemmed from long-standing argument over land linked to shrine.
- Police have detained alleged main attacker,Jahangir Madbar .
- This violence happened after Hossain had received threats for six months.
And now,the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has spoken out against the attack . They are calling on Bangladesh government and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to actually keep their promise of protecting media freedom.
This is not a small thing ah . The CPJ said that independent journalism is a right and needed for democracy, and they want accountability for people who attack journalists.
But you have to wonder what will happen next . Police have detained one person, but the threats were going on for months. It feels like a much deeper issue than just one person's anger…
