This Chirakkal railway gate news created lot of panic first, because reports made it sound like Mangaluru-Chennai Mail (Train No. 12602) almost met with accident due to gatekeeper negligence . But now Divisional Railway Manager ( DRM ) of Palakkad division,Madhukar Roat,is saying there were no safety lapses.
And honestly, this kind of clarification matters because railway gate stories scare people instantly . One small mistake near level crossing can become very big issue,so public reaction is understandable.
As per Madhukar Roat, train had actually stopped at red signal before moving ahead . That means system did what it was supposed to do . Train halted at level-crossing signal because gate was not cleared for passage .
Reports had also claimed gatekeeper Rajesh Kavalan was under influence of alcohol . But DRM dismissed that part and said train did not move until gate was securely closed . So according to railway side, there was no unsafe situation for road users.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Mangaluru-Chennai Mail (Train No. 12602) stopped at red signal before gate .
- All 122 level crossing gates in Palakkad division have interlocking mechanisms .
- Disciplinary actions initiated against Rajesh Kavalan for dereliction of duty .
And this interlocking part is actually main point . If gates are open, train cannot simply pass through,as per system design . So even if some confusion happened on ground, technical safety layer seems to have prevented bigger trouble .
But at same time, dereliction of duty is not small thing ah . Railway gates are not casual job posts where one delay or one careless moment can be ignored . If disciplinary actions are initiated, then clearly department also sees some lapse in conduct, even if accident risk was controlled by system .
Madhukar Roat also said regular safety drives are conducted in division, and counselling sessions are being given to staff at level crossings and stations . Fair enough, but public will still ask same basic question: if system worked, why did this scare happen in first place?
For now,Indian Railways is saying safety systems worked properly and there was no danger to road users . Maybe technically that is true . But when gatekeeper issue, red signal and near-accident reports all come together, people will still feel uneasy only…
