Very sad news has come from Payyambalam beach in Kannur,Kerala where body of 20-year-old tourist from Bengaluru,Santosh Kumar, was recovered on June 21,2026 . And honestly, beach trips turning into such tragedy always feels extra painful because one normal outing suddenly becomes worst memory for everyone.
Santosh was reportedly part of four-member group visiting from Bengaluru . On Saturday afternoon,he ventured around 200 meters into sea during high tide, and witnesses said strong waves caught him around 1:30 PM . That detail itself is scary because 200 meters during high tide is not small thing ah.
And after he was swept away, local rescue teams responded immediately . A large-scale search operation was launched by Azhikkal coastal police with support from Fisheries department, local fishers, lifeguards and rescue personnel using boats along coastline .
Later, help also came from Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala . After all those efforts,Santosh's body was recovered and then sent for post-mortem examination . Authorities plan to repatriate body to his home in Karnataka later on Sunday.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Santosh Kumar was swept away by strong waves at Payyambalam beach during high tide.
- Search involved Azhikkal coastal police,Fisheries department, local fishers, lifeguards, rescue personnel and Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala .
- Tourism Minister P.C . Vishnunadh announced plans for more lifeguards and warning boards at beach .
And tbh, this is where usual beach safety discussion comes back again . People go to sea thinking it is manageable, but rough weather and high tide can change situation within seconds only .
There was also another incident earlier where 24-year-old Chiranth Sharma was rescued after being stranded in turbulent sea . So this was not like one random warning sign getting ignored in calm water . Conditions were clearly dangerous.
During his visit to beach to oversee rescue operations,Minister Vishnunadh stressed need for better safety protocols . District Collector P. Vishnuraj also directed officials to ensure accommodations for affected group from Karnataka, which at least shows some immediate concern for those left behind.
But still, one young life is gone now . More lifeguards, warning boards, public awareness, all of it is needed, but question is whether people will actually take rough sea warnings seriously before another family gets this call…
