Just saw this news coming out of Colombia and wow,it's a big one . A former President,Alvaro Uribe Velez,is now under investigation for some really serious stuff.
The prosecutor's office confirmed on June 19,2026,that they are officially investigating him . The allegations are about his connections to paramilitary violence during a very turbulent period in the nation's history .
This whole thing goes back to his time as governor of Antioquia from 1995 to 1997 . He is accused of actually helping form these paramilitary groups, and these groups were involved in brutal massacres, including at places like La Granja and El Aro.
And you have to remember,Colombia's conflict had a death toll of over a quarter of a million people . That's not small thing ah. Later,Uribe's presidency from 2002 to 2010 was famous for its aggressive campaigns against leftist guerrillas.
And honestly, this is where things get complicated. He has always claimed he is innocent, but he was previously sentenced to 12 years of house arrest . That was for bribing paramilitary members to change their testimonies.
But then Bogota court overturned that conviction, and now the Supreme Court is reviewing the case all over again . It's a legal mess.
Few things standing out clearly rn:
- Uribe is being summoned for questioning about his alleged role in forming paramilitary groups.
- This whole investigation is unfolding just days before crucial presidential elections in Colombia.
- Uribe's own brother recently surrendered to serve a long prison sentence related to paramilitary leadership .
Uribe himself posted on X about the summons . He mentioned his concern about the timing,so close to the elections, but said he is prepared to face these allegations .
And the current Colombian President,Gustavo Petro, has even warned Uribe that he risks entering a "precarious situation" . Sounds like a political threat,if you ask me.
This whole inquiry feels like another chapter in Colombia trying to deal with its violent past . As these investigations into old atrocities continue, the nation is stuck trying to handle this legacy while also trying to move forward…
