So much political drama happening with Kolkata Municipal Corporation rn. It seems things got so bad that Calcutta High Court had to step in just to get basic meetings to happen .
On June 3,2026,the court gave a big ruling . It basically confirmed that KMC Chairperson Mala Roy is allowed to call for monthly meetings, which is her job according to the Municipal Act only .
And this whole thing went to court because there were allegations that even though Roy was calling for meetings,no meetings were being held at all . Can you imagine? The whole civic body just not meeting. Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya's bench gave this order .
The last KMC monthly meeting was way back on May 22 . And now court has ordered the civic body to submit an affidavit with all resolutions from that meeting by June 9.
And tbh, this is where things get really messy.
This whole situation is happening because of the recent change in the state government . There was a lot of speculation that maybe KMC would be dissolved completely. On May 22,something very strange happened. The meeting room was found locked when the Chairperson tried to start meeting . Trinamool Congress councillors couldn't even get inside.
Mayor Firhad Hakim called it a “black day” for the civic body . He even said the state government should focus on working together, not on confrontation. Not a small thing to say ah.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Court confirms KMC Chairperson's authority to call meetings.
- Civic governance is under serious question after the new government came .
- KMC has to submit records of its last meeting to court.
This ruling is a big deal, especially with all political tension . It's a reminder that municipal work has to continue,no matter who is in power at state level. Local governance can't just stop.
But now everyone is just waiting for next hearing on June 17 . Will this court order actually bring some order back to KMC,or is this just one small step in a much bigger fight…
