Just read this news about US proposing new tariffs and honestly,it's a big deal for India. They are talking about a 12.5% tariff on us and 59 other countries. And reason is very serious, they are alleging forced labour in making of imported goods .
This whole thing is coming from United States Trade Representative,or USTR. They are using something called Section 301 of their Trade Act of 1974 to do this . Basically, they're saying that key trading partners are not enforcing rules against forced labour.
And one Ambassador,Jamieson Greer, was very direct about it. He said the inaction is "unacceptable" and that American workers shouldn't have to compete with products made in such conditions. He feels it creates an uneven playing field.
And tbh, this is a massive accusation to make on global stage .
But proposal is not same for everyone. They have put a 12.5% tariff for most countries, but a lower 10% for those who are actually enforcing prohibitions on forced labour. So it's like they are trying to push countries to make changes.
Few things standing out clearly in this proposal:
- US proposing 12.5% tariff on India and 59 other nations.
- Reason given is failure to stop goods made by forced labour.
- Hearing on this whole matter is scheduled for July 7,2026.
And there's also this special textile mechanism they mentioned . It seems to be a way for some apparel and textiles to come into US with lower tariffs. Maybe to soften blow for certain industries I guess.
So it's not just a simple tariff, there are layers to this .
On one hand, you can say they are trying to promote ethical trade and human rights. But at same time, this will create huge economic pressure. Not small thing ah,for exporters.
The USTR has scheduled hearings for July 7, 2026,so this is not happening tomorrow. But it definitely signals a big shift in US trade policy. Makes you wonder how Indian government and industries will respond to this pressure…
