It started like meeting of industrialized nations trying to handle economic trouble, but slowly became one place where big countries discuss almost every global headache.
And if we look back, backdrop was not normal at all. There was civil unrest of 1960s,impact of Vietnam War,and whole global economic setup was shifting badly . At same time, decolonization was gaining momentum,so Global North also felt pressure to stay united.
In May 1964,President Lyndon Johnson spoke about need for prosperity and liberty in his 'Great Society' speech . That idea kind of matched mood of that period, where Western nations were looking for some common direction.
But actual G7 came up during economic crises of 1970s . First summit was held in 1975,with leaders from U.S.,U.K.,France,Germany,Italy,and Japan coming together to talk about financial problems . Not small thing ah,because world economy was already under serious stress.
Few things stand out clearly in this whole G7 journey:
- Formation of G7 happened to unify industrialized nations during economic crises.
- Its role expanded from economic coordination to security and environmental issues .
- After Cold War,it opened door to Russia and widened its influence on global governance.
And one major moment was oil crisis in 1973 . That crisis showed why such grouping was needed, because sudden economic shocks were not staying inside one country only . They were hitting everyone connected to global trade and energy.
Over time,G7 stopped being just about money and markets . It also started discussing geopolitical conflicts like Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and Iran-Iraq War . So yes, from finance table,it moved toward strategy table also.
After Cold War,things changed again. G7 invited Russia, which showed attempt to include post-Soviet Russia in global governance . It also supported Russia's transition toward market economy while trying to keep itself relevant in changing international relations .
And honestly, this is where G7 history feels complicated . It began as crisis-management club of rich industrialized nations, but then kept expanding its purpose as world problems kept changing . Question is,can same old structure really keep handling new global tensions forever…
