Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has emerged victorious after recent general election in Ethiopia, with his Prosperity Party retaining commanding majority in parliament by securing 438 out of 501 seats . This now allows Abiy to continue his leadership as he prepares to be sworn in for another term in October.
Supporters of Abiy are seeing this as continuation of his efforts to transform Ethiopia's economy and political system . And yes,for many people his rise in 2018 was seen as hopeful moment, especially after his push to reconcile ethnic divisions and end hostilities with Eritrea, which also brought him Nobel Peace Prize .
But at same time, this election was not some smooth national celebration ah . It was overshadowed by conflict, repression and lack of participation from opposition parties . That part cannot just be ignored because numbers alone don't tell full story.
Violence in regions like Amhara and Oromia has already made things very unstable, with armed groups resisting government's authority . On election day itself, numerous polling stations failed to open due to safety concerns, which says a lot about ground situation rn .
Few things standing out clearly in this election:
- Armed groups in Amhara and Oromia rejected election results, adding more pressure on government .
- Tigray region was entirely left out of elections, raising fears after devastating civil war that officially ended in 2022.
- U.S. and EU have called for de-escalation,warning about possible regional instability.
And Tigray is honestly biggest worry here . Region is still recovering from brutal civil war,and now recent alliance between Eritrea and Tigray's leaders has added another complicated layer . If conflict starts again,it may not stay inside Ethiopia only .
Security experts are already warning that internal divisions and old grievances could bring back violence, especially with Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) reasserting its authority in Tigray . Reports of forced recruitment by TPLF and rising tensions between group and Abiy's government make situation even more uncomfortable.
Cameron Hudson,an Africa analyst, says both sides share responsibility for escalating tensions, and international community is watching closely . European Union has urged immediate de-escalation,while U.S. has implemented targeted visa restrictions on TPLF leaders and their families .
So yes,Abiy Ahmed has won big politically, but question is whether that victory can actually calm Ethiopia or whether it will deepen existing fractures more…
