So looks like this India-US trade deal everyone is talking about for long time... might actually be close to finishing .
The US Ambassador to India,Sergio Gor,just revealed at the CITI India 2026 Conference that the whole thing is 99% finalized . That is very close ah.
He sounded quite positive about it,saying only few remaining issues need to be addressed . He called it a potential "win-win" for both countries, which is what you always hear with these deals.
And apparently, things are moving fast . Earlier on same day,Gor met with a US delegation from Washington,D.C. . This delegation has been in Delhi for few days discussing deal and is expected to come back to meet Piyush Goyal, our Union Commerce and Industry Minister,to get it over the line.
And tbh, this is the part that is really interesting.
Gor highlighted how quickly these discussions have gone on . He said India-US talks progressed a lot in just 18 months . You compare that to the European Union's agreement with India, that one took nearly 19 years . So this is moving at super speed.
He was also posting about it on social media platform X . He shared updates after meeting Brendan Lynch, the Assistant United States Trade Representative, and said the whole effort is guided by vision of both President Trump and Prime Minister Modi . His message ended with "Progress is being made!".
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Deal is reportedly 99% finalized with just small issues remaining.
- US delegation will return to Delhi to meet Piyush Goyal for final phase.
- Negotiations have been super fast, only 18 months compared to 19 years for EU deal .
Everyone is saying this agreement will enhance trade and investment for both sides . And that India and the US are like-minded partners and all that.
But you know how these negotiations are . That last 1% can sometimes be the trickiest part . I just wonder what those last few issues are that they're still ironing out…
