So government has finally decided to step in and help out the aviation sector . The Union Cabinet just approved a massive ₹10,000 crore package which is honestly,a huge amount.
This whole thing is happening because of the crisis in West Asia which has made aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices go completely crazy . This money is basically one-time budgetary assistance to keep fuel prices stable for our Indian airlines.
And the way they are doing it is interesting . It's not a direct cash handout to airlines. Instead, government is giving interest-free advances to the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) so they don't take big losses from the fluctuating fuel costs. Smart move maybe.
This support is planned for 36 months, with reviews happening every year to see if it's still needed . The main goal is to give airlines some predictability ah,so they aren't constantly shocked by sudden price jumps that mess up their entire operations.
And tbh,the price jumps were not small . International ATF prices went up almost 2.5 times, from ₹60.50 per litre in March 2026 to a shocking ₹142 per litre in May 2026 . That kind of increase can cripple any airline .
Few things to note here:
- Government approved ₹10,000 crore to help airlines with fuel prices.
- This support will last for 36 months and get reviewed every year.
- ATF prices went crazy, from ₹60.50 to ₹142 per litre in just few months .
But this isn't just simple transfer . There will be proper Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the airlines and the OMCs . And Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will also be signatories,so everything is official .
And they are saying this isn't just about airlines only . If airlines are stable,it helps other sectors too like tourism, trade, and even regional development . Everything is connected after all .
This whole support mechanism is being seen as very important for the recovery of the aviation industry, which has been hit hard by so many global issues and rising costs lately .
But for how long can this kind of support continue . ₹10,000 crore is lot of money, and while it's needed rn,you have to wonder what plan is for after these 36 months are over…
