This whole issue from Papanasam Taluk is honestly quite worrying,because converting sugar mill into brewery is one thing,but if river water is getting polluted after that,then farmers are obviously going to panic .
And this is not some small stream with no use ah . Pazhavaru river is used for irrigation across hundreds of acres of farmland between Kabisthalam and Kumbakonam. For farmers in Kumbakonam area,this water is directly linked to crops,cattle and daily survival .
Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association,through its secretary Sundara Vimalanathan,has alleged that brewery operations have led to pollution of Pazhavaru river . According to him,this river is not just irrigation source,but also drinking water source for cattle.
And now local residents are reportedly saying water quality has gone down badly after brewery started functioning . Some people have complained of skin irritation and itching after coming into contact with river water,which is not small thing at all.
Even livestock are reportedly avoiding area because of unpleasant chemical odors . That part feels especially serious,because animals usually react before humans fully accept something is wrong .
Few things standing out clearly in this issue:
- Untreated wastewater discharge poses threat to local groundwater sources .
- Skin irritation has been reported by residents after contact with Pazhavaru river.
- Immediate government action is being demanded as authorities have received complaints and are investigating.
Farmers fear that if untreated waste continues going into Pazhavaru,groundwater may also get affected . And once groundwater is hit,it is not just one-season problem only. It can damage agriculture,human consumption and whole local life around that area.
District authorities have reportedly taken note of complaints sent through email and forwarded them to relevant departments for action . But honestly,people will want more than files moving from one office to another rn .
The farmers' association is asking for strict monitoring of brewery operations so pollution does not continue and local livelihoods are protected . And at same time,local community and environmental voices are keeping watch because if river,cattle,crops and groundwater are all at risk,then how long can people wait before damage becomes permanent…
