Something very warm is coming from Fort Kochi, and honestly,it feels different from usual news . Mehboob Memorial Orchestra is not just some old music group sitting with memories,it feels like people are still holding H Mehboob close even as centenary of his birth comes near.
In Fort Kochi, this place has become almost like small music adda for those who still connect with Mehboob’s songs . Walls are filled with photographs and memorabilia, and for fans, this is not decoration only,it is emotion ah .
K Hussain, secretary of orchestra, said it simply: “This is how we keep the spirit of his music alive.” And that line actually explains whole thing better than any big speech.
Founded in 1985,just few years after Mehboob’s passing, the orchestra was made to honour his journey and also give platform to emerging artists . Hussain remembers him with lot of affection, saying,“Bhai was one of a kind — a true maverick. No one could guess what he had up his sleeve, and that was part of his appeal.”
Every Friday, members gather and perform . Not like big commercial event, but more like people coming together because one singer’s music still means something to them. And tbh, that kind of loyalty is rare now.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Tribute to Mohammed Rafi — orchestra hosts annual Rafi Nites, celebrating melodies that influenced Mehboob's style.
- Emotional connection with audiences — Mehboob’s performances often pulled bigger crowds than even renowned artists .
- Musical mentorship — Junior Mehboob continues to honour his mentor through performances and tributes .
Mehboob’s own story started from very simple surroundings, singing in local gatherings and events across Fort Kochi . Then film industry noticed him,and he went on to contribute to Malayalam cinema in serious way. His song “Maanennum vilikkilla” from Neelakkuyil pushed him into fame, and people still remember that voice.
But even after success,Mehboob apparently never became that typical spotlight-seeking star . K Pradeep,a veteran journalist, described him beautifully: “He was a poetic wanderer, who didn’t want to possess anything.” That says lot about kind of person he was.
And now,as Mehboob Memorial Orchestra marks this milestone,it feels like Fort Kochi is not just remembering singer, but trying to keep one whole mood alive . How long can such love survive only through weekly gatherings, old photos and songs…
