This Kolkata road renaming issue has suddenly become much bigger than just changing one street name . Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of West Bengal has now renamed Kolkata's Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road, and reactions are already split badly.
Decision was formalized through notification from Kolkata Municipal Corporation on June 20 . And since this is being called government's first major act since taking office, obviously political message behind it is being discussed everywhere.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has described move as act of "restoring historical justice" . His argument is that earlier name honored someone who "misused power for political gain",which is direct reference many are connecting with Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and communal riots of 1946,known as Great Calcutta Killings .
And honestly, this is where debate gets messy.
Right-wing groups have long objected to name Suhrawardy Avenue because they link it with Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy . For them, renaming it after Gopal Mukherjee, also known as Gopal Patha,is about honoring someone they believe protected Hindu families during violent riots.
Few things standing out clearly in this whole issue:
- Kolkata's Suhrawardy Avenue has been renamed to Gopal Mukherjee Road through Kolkata Municipal Corporation notification on June 20 .
- Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari says move is about "restoring historical justice" and honoring true heroes.
- Some historians argue road was actually named after Hassan Shaheed Suhrawardy, not Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy.
But historians are not fully buying government's version ah . Some scholars say road was named after Hassan Shaheed Suhrawardy,Huseyn's uncle, and he had no connection to riots . Historical records also reportedly show street was called Suhrawardy Avenue as early as 1932,long before Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy's rise in politics.
That one detail changes whole argument in uncomfortable way . If name was never meant for Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, then question becomes whether this is really historical correction or political memory being reshaped for present-day mood.
At same time, supporters of rename say Gopal Mukherjee deserves recognition because he was fearless protector who saved countless lives during turbulent period . Chief Minister Adhikari also presented him in that light, and for many right-wing groups, this feels like long-pending respect finally being given.
Still, this kind of renaming is never only about signboard . It touches memory, identity, old wounds and who gets called hero in public space . And in Bengal politics rn,that question itself is becoming battlefield…
