This Tamil Nadu Assembly live telecast issue is honestly not small thing ah,because it directly touches public right to see what elected representatives are actually saying inside House . On June 20, 2026,Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu, formally wrote to Assembly Speaker J.C.D . Prabhakar asking for immediate action.
And his point is pretty simple . If Assembly proceedings are happening but people cannot watch them live, then what is whole purpose of calling Assembly in first place? Voters send MLAs there,so hiding or limiting what they say feels very uncomfortable.
In his letter,Udhayanidhi Stalin said not telecasting sessions would defeat purpose of convening Assembly and also disrespect electorate who voted for representatives . That line hits because Assembly is not private meeting room,it is supposed to be public democratic space.
He also pointed out that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had given assurances about live telecasts . But according to him, discussions around Governor's Address have not been aired as promised.
And this is where inconsistency becomes main issue. Debate on resolution opposing construction of dam at Mekedatu was shown live, but when focus shifted to Governor's Address, broadcast was abruptly stopped . If one part can be shown live, why not other part also?
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Udhayanidhi Stalin demanded live broadcasts for Assembly accountability.
- He said government had already promised to resume live telecasts.
- He criticised edited debates which appeared to favor ruling party.
But what makes this more serious is his complaint about edited coverage . He said releasing only edited versions of debates, which seemed to favor ruling party, affects freedom of expression of MLAs and hurts democratic fabric of state .
And tbh, that concern is valid from opposition side. If public only gets government-approved clips, then people are not seeing full argument, full criticism,or full response . They are seeing controlled version only.
Udhayanidhi Stalin also questioned whether suppressing MLA voices matches the “change” promised by ruling party after coming to power . He said preventing public from accessing views of representatives is like pushing democracy into darkness .
His letter even compared expectation that media should carry only government-approved clips to fascist approach to governance . Strong words, yes, but question still stays hanging there… if Assembly belongs to people, why should people not see it live?
