Chennai’s Pallikaranai wetland issue is not some new discussion, but this June 21,2026 meeting at IIT-Madras Research Park feels like people finally trying to put all scattered anger and concern in one place . And honestly, for city like Chennai, this is not small thing ah .
Oorvani Foundation and Chennai Wetlands Action Collective brought together researchers, civic groups and local residents there . From that meeting, the Pallikaranai Collective was formed to focus on problems around Pallikaranai watershed in Kovalam basin .
And main idea is to create People’s Charter for conservation and better management of wetland . Sounds formal, but at ground level it basically means residents and experts want clear action before more damage happens.
Pallikaranai wetland is tied directly to Chennai's ecological health and flood resilience . But at same time,it has been taking pressure from urbanization and industrial development for years. One side city keeps expanding, other side marsh keeps shrinking or getting disturbed… this is where problem becomes scary.
S. Janakarajan, president of South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies, said government agencies have shifted focus toward urban development while environmental sustainability is getting pushed aside . He also pointed out that Greater Chennai Corporation and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority often work in silos, which makes proper planning harder.
Few things clearly came up in this meeting:
- Concerns over urbanization — Participants highlighted the detrimental effects of rampant urban development on the wetland ecosystem.
- Need for accountability — Activists urged for release of the Thiruppugazh Committee report on flood mitigation measures.
- Call for comprehensive mapping — Experts stressed the importance of creating a detailed watershed-based map to monitor and manage the wetland effectively.
But discussion did not stop at broad points only . People also raised Metro Rail construction impact on marsh, sewage pollution and loss of biodiversity. These are not small separate issues, they all hit same wetland from different sides.
Local residents from Thalambur,Madambakkam and Velachery shared what they are seeing and facing because of ongoing degradation . Dayanand Krishnan from Chitlapakkam Rising called for proper mapping of watershed so people can understand ecological dynamics better.
And tbh, this is where citizen groups matter . Because if only agencies sit in rooms and keep making plans without residents, then places like Pallikaranai become just another file. But for people living near these areas, flooding, pollution and loss of marsh are daily reality.
Now Pallikaranai Collective is taking shape, and it may give one common voice to residents and experts who want Chennai’s wetlands protected . Still, big question is whether authorities will actually listen before next flood or next round of construction pressure comes…
