Chennai Metro Rail phase II project may be important,no doubt, but residents dealing with flooding and sewage inside homes is not small thing ah .
Main problem seems to have started after portion of storm-water drain along service road was demolished for construction work . And because there is no proper alternative stormwater drain, area has become very vulnerable whenever rain comes.
Radha, one local resident, explained it very directly: “Water from the neighbouring localities flows into the service road, causing heavy waterlogging even during moderate rainfall.” That line itself tells you how bad situation is,because even moderate rainfall is enough to create heavy waterlogging.
And after heavy showers in April, this apparently became regular problem only . Residents are saying flooding is not some one-off issue anymore,it keeps happening and daily movement itself becomes irritating .
But waterlogging is just one part of mess.
Himachalan A.,another resident, said sewage problems also started because work has affected sewer line . His words are honestly worrying: “As sewer line has been affected by the work, we have experienced sewage overflow in our house on quite a few occasions.” Imagine dealing with metro construction outside and sewage overflow inside house at same time.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Residents are facing waterlogging even during light rain because construction disrupted drainage.
- Sewer line problems have led to sewage overflow inside homes on quite a few occasions.
- People are frustrated because temporary fixes are not giving permanent relief .
Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited have accepted there are issues with stormwater drainage and sewerage systems . One official said,“There is an issue with the gradient of the drain too,and hence, the waterlogging occurs. We need some time, but we will definitely resolve it.”
That sounds reassuring on paper, but residents are clearly not fully convinced rn . Because when you are repeatedly calling contractors and still same problem returns after rain, patience will obviously run out.
And with monsoon season approaching, pressure is building fast . If drains are not fixed before heavier rain,Indira Nagar Second Avenue residents may again be stuck between construction barricades, flooded roads and sewage trouble…
Big infrastructure is needed, but why does it so often feel like local residents are expected to just adjust endlessly…
