This India-U.S. trade deal story is getting interesting now, because U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to visit India on June 23-24 . And honestly, when visit happens at this stage,it usually means both sides are trying to push things past last few stuck points.
Greer is expected to meet officials from Ministry of Commerce, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal . Main discussion is around interim trade deal which, according to sources within government,is just few final touches away from completion .
But at same time, this is not simple signing-and-smiling moment also . Tariffs are still sitting in middle of everything, and that is where deal seems to be getting slowed down .
Piyush Goyal has already made India’s position pretty clear . He said,"We cannot implement the FTA until we secure competitive advantage," and that line basically explains why India is not rushing blindly into agreement.
Few things standing out in this whole trade talk:
- Jamieson Greer is set to visit India on June 23-24 for discussions with Ministry of Commerce officials .
- Many key elements of interim trade deal have reportedly already been settled.
- Tariff issues from U.S . side are still causing delay in finalizing agreement .
And tbh, this is where trade negotiations become messy . On paper, both countries want better trade relations and economic cooperation . But in actual meeting room, every tariff, every provision, every advantage matters .
Greer’s visit also comes after Assistant USTR Brendan Lynch’s recent trip to New Delhi,so clearly this is not one-off conversation . There has been some back and forth already, and now both sides appear to be entering final stretch .
But another layer is U.S . investigation under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974 . That investigation is checking whether India and other trade partners are taking adequate measures against forced labor practices . USTR has also proposed tariffs on countries failing to comply, and that complicates talks more.
Still, sources suggest U.S. wants to offer preferential treatment to countries with which it has trade agreements . For India, that could mean competitive edge over other nations and better environment for trade and investment.
But until tariff question is fully settled, this deal feels like it is close, but not fully safe yet . One side wants speed, other side wants advantage, and somewhere between both, this agreement is still waiting…
