Wow,US is really not holding back on its NATO allies anymore . Some very strong words came from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during that NATO meeting in Brussels on June 18,2026.
He announced a huge six-month review of American military forces in Europe . And honestly, his reasoning is what's making news everywhere. He basically said European allies are not committed enough to their own security .
And he gave one direct quote: "This will be a real review. It will be designed to ensure that NATO is moving fast and irreversibly toward Europe leading, stepping up to take primary responsibility for the defense of Europe." That sounds less like a suggestion and more like ultimatum.
But this is where things get even more direct . Hegseth also pointed out that some European nations are not even giving U.S. forces proper access to military bases for operations, especially against threats like Iran. He called this situation "shameful" and said it puts American troops at risk.
And tbh, that's a very serious accusation to make publicly .
He added,"These allies put America's sons and daughters at risk by denying them predictable access, basing, and overflight that never should have been in question at all." Hearing that, you can feel the frustration is at very high level rn .
Few things standing out in this whole situation:
- NATO spending did go up by $90 billion with European allies boosting budgets 20% last year .
- Hegseth is apparently pushing for a new "NATO 3.0" to handle modern threats.
- U.S. is also limiting military assets to Europe because of growing tensions with China.
Hegseth also criticized European priorities, saying "the focus has been on gender equity and climate change and defense austerity," which he feels has weakened their defense. This is same kind of thinking we have heard from Vice President JD Vance before.
Of course,NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte tried to smooth things over . He pointed to that big $90 billion increase in defense spending from European members . He assured everyone that NATO is committed to getting stronger.
But it feels like US is looking for more than just money . It’s about a change in mindset. This whole thing feels like a major pivot, forcing Europe to stand on its own feet more. What happens if they don't meet these expectations in six months…
