Odisha politics got one more messy twist on June 22,2026,when Surama Padhy,Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly,dismissed disqualification petitions against 11 MLAs . And honestly,this is not small thing ah,especially because whole issue came from alleged cross-voting during Rajya Sabha elections held in March.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress had filed petitions against these MLAs,accusing them of not following party line during voting . But Speaker did not accept that case as strong enough and said petitions lacked proper substance and clarity.
And this is where matter becomes little awkward for both parties . BJD had already suspended several members for anti-party activities,but suspension and disqualification are not same thing . Speaker basically found that petitions were not detailed enough to move further.
Among suspended BJD members,Arvind Mohapatra and Sanatan Mahakud were named in connection with allegations of defying party directives during elections . From Congress side,Sofia Firdus and Ramesh Chandra Jena were also implicated .
Few things standing out clearly here:

- BJD and Congress had jointly supported Datteswar Hota,who lost election.
The most direct part of ruling came when Padhy said,“The petition is cryptic,vague,unsubstantiated and does not fulfil statutory requirements.” That line pretty much explains why matter did not go ahead . Strong allegation maybe,but weak paperwork can ruin whole case only.
And tbh,that must be frustrating for BJD and Congress because Datteswar Hota losing election already raised questions about loyalty inside both parties . If MLAs really did not follow party direction,then it exposes internal cracks . But proving that legally is different game.
At same time,this dismissal does not make political discomfort disappear . Party discipline,trust among MLAs,and future voting strategy in Odisha will probably become even more sensitive now,because leadership will not want same embarrassment again .
But bigger question is still hanging there . If parties cannot clearly prove who went against them,and MLAs keep denying or escaping action,then what exactly happens to party loyalty before upcoming elections…
