So,it's official now,Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal has taken charge as new Director General of Police for Tamil Nadu . This feels like a major shift for the state police,especially coming right after the elections.
He officially took over on the morning of June 3,2026 at around 10:45 AM . The whole ceremony happened at the DGP Headquarters in Chennai. He is 34th officer to take this top post,which is big responsibility ah.
And this move comes just after Tamil Nadu Assembly elections which were on April 23 . state government sent a panel recommendation to the UPSC,and they approved Aggarwal's name. So this seems like a very deliberate choice by the new government.
But who is he exactly . He's a 1994-batch IPS officer,so he has decades of experience in different police roles all over Tamil Nadu . That long experience on the ground is probably why he was chosen.
Apparently he's known for some very specific things:
- Aggarwal’s focus on modern policing — aims to enhance public safety through technology-driven initiatives.
- Experience in crime prevention — known for expanding Chennai's CCTV network and reducing nighttime crimes .
- Key investigations led — supervised major cases,including the high-profile Salem train robbery.
And his background is quite interesting too . He was born in Punjab but is fluent in Tamil and English. He also has a law degree and is a qualified advocate. That's a pretty diverse skill set for a police chief.
Honestly,it's his work on that 'Night Crime to Zero' program that stands out for me . Trying to bring nighttime offenses to zero is a huge goal,and it shows he's not afraid to be proactive . He also really pushed for expanding the CCTV network in Chennai.
So now all eyes are on him only .
Expectations are obviously very high . Everyone is hoping he will use his field experience and his focus on modern policing to make things better. People are seeing his appointment as a big moment for Tamil Nadu Police.
