This Karnataka PU lecturer issue is honestly turning into bigger fight than government probably expected . One rule change, and suddenly lecturers, principals and education groups are all angry because they feel this is not just about extra classes,it is about professional respect also.
Karnataka government has issued new draft rules under Karnataka General Services (Pre-University Education) (Recruitment) Rules-2013 . These rules say lecturers from government pre-university (PU) colleges, appointed through direct recruitment and promotion, may have to teach classes 9 and 10 in government high schools too .
And this is where educators are objecting strongly . Their point is simple:PU lecturers were appointed for PU college work, not for high school teaching duties . For them, this shift feels like lowering status and mixing up roles without proper discussion.
Government side seems to be linking this with Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) initiative, where classes 1 to 12 are brought under one roof, similar to central syllabus schools . On paper,it may sound neat and efficient, but on ground, teachers are saying system cannot just merge responsibilities like that.
Few things standing out in this whole fight:
- New rules require PU lecturers to teach high school classes.
- Lecturers and principals plan to protest changes.
- Similar proposals in 2022 and November 2025 faced backlash and were withdrawn.
Ninge Gowda A.H. ,president of the Karnataka State Pre-University Colleges Lecturers’ Association, has raised serious concern over this amendment . He said moving PU lecturers from Group B posts to Group C posts goes against Karnataka Civil Services Rules and may reduce professional standing of lecturers.
And tbh, that is not small thing ah . For many government employees, post category and service rules matter a lot because it affects dignity, career identity and how department treats them.
What is also upsetting educators is that earlier similar moves were dropped after protests . They say previous government had assured that no such proposals would be taken forward, but now again same kind of draft has come, with just seven-day window for objections .
Another complaint is timing . Since current administration does not have a minister for education, many feel this amendment was pushed in hurry and without enough stakeholder consultation . That is why anger is not only about teaching classes 9 and 10,but also about how decision was made .
Now lecturers’ association has announced one-day boycott of classes to oppose draft, and they are also warning about indefinite strike if government does not withdraw it . So for now, students, teachers and colleges are stuck in middle of policy fight, and nobody knows how far this standoff will go…
