On June 22, 2026,one major fish kill was reported at Boyapadu beach in Anakapalli district, and Fisheries Department had to move quickly.
A team was sent to collect samples of dead fish and nearby water . Those samples have now been forwarded to State Institute of Fisheries Technology (SIFT) in Kakinada for detailed analysis .
This whole probe is happening under National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) . And yes,it sounds technical, but at ground level it simply means officials are trying to find out what killed so many fish and whether local aquaculture is in danger .
According to a representative from NSPAAD,the investigation started after directions from Principal and Additional Director of SIFT . It was carried out under supervision of local Fisheries Department officials.
And this is where concern becomes bigger. This is not just about fish dying in one patch of water . Local fisheries, shrimp ponds and people depending on these activities can all get affected if cause turns out to be pollution, disease or oxygen issue.
Few things standing out rn:
- Samples of dead fish and water were sent to State Institute of Fisheries Technology (SIFT) in Kakinada .
- Team also expanded surveillance to shrimp ponds in nearby areas to test for possible pathogens .
- Joint discussions are underway between CMFRI and Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board to check possible reasons behind fish mortality .
Environmental Engineers are also part of this now, mainly checking dissolved oxygen levels and other critical water quality parameters . Low oxygen in water can create serious trouble for aquatic life,so that angle cannot be taken lightly only .
Joe K. Kizhakudan,Principal Scientist at Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, has also stressed need to understand actual cause behind this incident . He pointed toward timely intervention so similar situations can be avoided in future.
For now,post-mortem report is still pending and full findings are expected in coming days . Till then, people in area are left with same uncomfortable question… was this natural,or did something in water go badly wrong?
