Just saw news about gunfire at the airport in Niamey,Niger's capital and it's seriously alarming . Waking up to something like this must be so terrifying for residents there.
The reports say gunfire started around 06:00 AM on June 18,2026 and went on for about one hour . Witnesses said it was all happening near the airport entrance.
And according to Reuters news agency, some people even reported hearing explosions during this time . Gunfire and explosions at an airport, that is not small thing ah .
And honestly, this is where things get really concerning.
This whole incident is happening while Niger is already struggling with a militant Islamist insurgency for more than a decade . The situation is already so tense with military juntas in power in Niger and also neighboring countries like Burkina Faso and Mali. People are already unhappy with how governments are failing to stop violence.
Few things standing out clearly in this situation:
- Gunfire reportedly started near airport entrance.
- Some witnesses also heard explosions during the incident .
- So far no group has claimed responsibility.
But what's really making me nervous is that this isn't the first time . affiliate of Islamic State group had attacked this same Niamey airport back in January 2026 only . It shows there is a continuous threat in that area .
And tbh,the worst part is the silence. current authorities have not yet made any comment on this latest incident . So everyone is just left guessing what happened, who did it,and if the airport is even safe rn .
It just feels like one more sign of the instability in the whole region . You have these militant groups, unpopular military governments… and then you have ordinary people just trying to live their lives in middle of all this chaos .
What must it be like to live with that kind of constant fear…
