Okay this whole drama between Italy's PM Giorgia Meloni and Donald Trump is just getting so strange now . I mean, one minute they are allies, next minute he's claiming she "begged" him for a photograph. Very weird stuff.
And this whole thing started after Trump gave an interview to Italian television channel La7 . He apparently suggested that he felt sorry for Meloni, and that’s why he agreed to take photo with her at G7 summit.
But Meloni was not having any of it . She went straight to Instagram to post her side of story. She said Trump’s statement was completely false and even declared,"Neither I nor Italy ever beg." That is very strong statement ah.
And tbh, this is where you have to wonder what is really going on behind scenes.
Meloni also questioned why Trump would talk like this about an ally, and not use same kind of language for actual adversaries of West . Which is a fair point I think. It’s confusing because their relationship used to seem so supportive. She was the only European leader at his inauguration after all .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Trump claimed Meloni "begged" for a picture during the G7 summit .
- Meloni's response was sharp, stating "Neither I nor Italy ever beg".
- Disagreements over military operations and Pope Leo XIV have also strained things.
But then, after all this public fighting,Meloni says there are no hard feelings between them . She even said they continue to understand each other and joked about Trump's claim that she had "abandoned" him by saying "We’ve always been friends."
This is all happening with some serious geopolitical stuff in the background too . Like Italy refusing to let US use a Sicilian air base for military operations in Iran conflict. And Meloni also defended Pope Leo XIV against some of Trump's criticisms. So it's not just about one photo .
This back and forth is just so public,it feels less like diplomacy and more like some reality TV show drama .
Are they really friends or is this just what international politics looks like now… I don't even know what to think .
