CrimeCon 2026: True Crime Fans Converge Amid Personal Tragedies

Key Takeaways

  • CrimeCon connects true crime fans with victims' families
  • Ethical concerns over victim representation highlighted
  • Attendance reached 6,500, showcasing genre's growth

CrimeCon in Las Vegas is one of those events that always feels slightly uncomfortable to think about . On one side, you have true crime fans, podcasters, authors and content creators. But at same time, you also have real families walking around with real pain, trying to keep someone’s name alive.

And this year also, annual CrimeCon drew very mixed crowd . Not just people interested in crime stories, but advocates and relatives of victims who are still fighting for justice in unresolved cases . That mix of entertainment and grief is not small thing ah.

Among attendees was Dr. Maggie Zingman, whose daughter,Brittany Phillips, was murdered in 2004 . Zingman has been travelling extensively to share her daughter’s story and keep public attention on case .

She also clearly understands commercial side of CrimeCon,but still sees some good in it. Her words were very direct: “I wouldn’t get 8,000 people learning about my story if it wasn’t here.” And honestly, that one line explains whole tension around event.

Few things standing out clearly here:

  • True crime genre has grown fast because of podcasts and documentaries .
  • Advocates are pushing people to focus more on victims, not perpetrators .
  • Many booths at CrimeCon promote victim advocacy and public safety.

But as CrimeCon has grown, questions have also grown with it . Attendance reached 6,500 this year, and with that kind of crowd, criticism is obvious . Many people feel true crime content too often turns criminals into main characters while victims and families become background.

Parents of Gabby Petito, who gained national attention after her tragic murder, have also used platform to promote their foundation aimed at preventing domestic violence and supporting missing persons cases. That part feels meaningful, because at least some families are trying to turn public attention into something useful.

Event co-founder Kevin Balfe said CrimeCon has changed into community that genuinely cares about advocacy. “We’ve curated an audience of people who,I think, really care,” he stated. And tbh, maybe many attendees do care, but question is still there.

People at CrimeCon attend talks on ethical true crime fandom, meet industry professionals and take part in different activities. Still, when real murder stories become content, community and business at same place,it becomes hard to separate awareness from entertainment…
