This Australia drug bust sounds straight out of crime series only, but it is real . Australian Federal Police seized 2.7 tonnes of cocaine and officials are calling it largest drug bust in country’s history, which is not small thing ah .
The cocaine was valued at approximately A$816 million and was reportedly hidden inside underground bunker system in western Sydney . Just imagining that kind of setup itself shows how far these networks are willing to go for money.
Operation happened on June 22 and police arrested two men aged 21 and 25 . Both allegedly tried to evade capture during raid, but Australian Federal Police still caught them .
And tbh, this is where case gets bigger than just one Sydney raid.
Police believe cocaine was smuggled into Australia through small town of Midge Point in North Queensland . Investigators say organized crime group was behind this whole movement, which makes situation far more serious than local drug case .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- 2.7 tonnes of cocaine confiscated in Sydney, largest seizure in country’s history.
- Drugs were estimated at A$816 million, showing huge scale of trade.
- Cocaine was linked to organized crime network and smuggling route through Midge Point in North Queensland .
The two suspects have been charged with possessing significant quantity of unlawfully imported drug . If convicted, they are facing potential life sentences, which shows how heavy this case is legally also.
This raid was part of Operation Minjiang, launched earlier this year after 40 kg of cocaine was found floating near boat ramp . That detail alone feels strange, because one floating discovery slowly seems to have opened much bigger chain.
Commander Stephen Jay of the AFP said,“This demonstrates extreme lengths that organized crime networks will go to in pursuit of profit.” And honestly, that line fits case perfectly because underground bunkers, boat routes, international links… this was not small planning .
Authorities are still trying to trace where drugs came from and break down criminal syndicates involved . They have also detained suspected “mother vessel” linked to smuggling operation in the Solomon Islands,so this case clearly stretches beyond Australia.
And now question is how many more such routes are already active quietly before police even get close…
