This latest statement from Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif honestly sounds less like calm policy talk and more like country under pressure trying to sound tough . Water issue is serious,no doubt,but directly talking about war with India is not small thing ah .
Speaking to ARY News on June 20,2026,Asif said,"The moment we feel that our national security,and water is part of our national security, is being threatened,we will go to war against India. Definitely." And that one line itself has now pushed tensions higher.
But context here matters. Pakistan is already dealing with severe internal instability and major water crisis,which many are blaming on mismanagement inside country itself . So when threat comes from that background,it feels like frustration is also spilling out.
This whole issue has become sharper after India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty . That decision came after Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025,where 26 fatalities were reported. India’s position is also very clear,the treaty will stay suspended until Pakistan takes credible steps to dismantle its cross-border terrorism infrastructure.
Few points standing out right now:
- Military action considered — Asif claims military response if India disrupts water supplies.
- Indus Waters Treaty suspended — India halts treaty following terrorist attacks linked to Pakistan.
- Water crisis in Pakistan — Nearly one-third of population affected by severe shortages.
And tbh,the Indus Waters Treaty is not small arrangement. It historically allows Pakistan to utilize 80% of Indus water basin,so suspension has obviously become huge pressure point for Islamabad.
Asif also accused India of manipulating water flows from the Chenab River and withholding essential data . But then his own statement weakened his case,as he admitted that despite having conducted numerous inspections,he lacked current information regarding developments over the past year. That is where questions start coming naturally.
Inside Pakistan,situation already looks very messy. Regions like Sindh and Balochistan are facing serious shortages because of infrastructure failures and water distribution disputes . Official reports say North West Canal faces deficit of 64.1%,while Rice and Dadu Canals report shortages of 38% and 82%,respectively .
Even Sukkur Barrage is seeing declining water levels,and local leaders are warning about impending economic disaster because government has not been able to resolve ongoing water distribution disputes . So blaming India alone may sound convenient,but internal cracks are also visible only.
And that is what makes this whole thing worrying. When water stress,terrorism tensions,weak governance and military threats all come together,one angry statement can carry much bigger risk than it first appears…
