This ammonia gas leak case from Manjangaranai , near Periyapalayam ,Tamil Nadu is really worrying because 67 workers needed medical attention suddenly on June 21, 2026 . And honestly, when so many people fall sick at workplace same time, that is not small thing ah.
Incident happened at private seafood processing facility, and according to district collector S. Kavitha, workers had to be rushed immediately to hospitals . 46 were taken to Vels Hospital and 21 were taken to Venkateshwara Hospital .
But situation became more serious because nine critically ill patients were shifted to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai for advanced care . senior doctor at one of hospitals confirmed there were no fatalities, but several patients are still critical .
Most affected workers are young women, aged between 24 and 25,and many are migrant workers from northern India . That part makes this feel even more uncomfortable because these workers are usually far away from home, depending fully on factory safety and local support.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- 67 workers hospitalized following major ammonia leak at seafood processing unit .
- No fatalities reported, with doctors confirming all affected individuals remain alive, although many are critical.
- Investigation launched into cause of leak and safety measures at facility.
And tbh,the medical details are quite scary . Medical team said out of 44 patients admitted to their facility, around 15 to 16 required intubation, with 11 on ventilator support . That means this was not some mild irritation incident only.
Doctors are still sounding hopeful because patients are young, and they are closely watching pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs . But ventilator support after gas leak shows how dangerous ammonia exposure can become within minutes.
District Collector S. Kavitha visited incident site and also met patients in hospitals to oversee relief efforts . A formal investigation has been ordered to find out what caused valve failure and whether there were lapses in safety protocols at seafood export unit .
And this is where bigger question starts . If one valve failure can send 67 workers to hospital, then what kind of safety checks were actually happening there before leak…
