This new U.S. student visa update honestly feels like one more headache for international students who are already under so much pressure . White House has recently given green light to new regulation,and if this goes ahead,it can seriously change how long foreign students can legally stay in United States.
And main change is coming from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) . It wants to replace current 'duration of status' policy with fixed periods of stay for students and exchange visitors. Means instead of staying as long as studies continue properly,students may get fixed time limit.
Right now,international students holding F visas can stay in U.S. for duration of their academic studies,as long as they maintain enrollment and follow visa rules . But under new proposal,if course goes beyond fixed period,student will have to apply for extension from U.S. immigration authorities.
And this is not small thing ah,because many programs do not finish neatly inside same timeline . Research degrees,PhD work,delays,credit issues,personal problems… academic life is not always perfectly planned.
Few things standing out clearly here:

But timing of this proposal is also raising concern . International students are already facing more checks and stricter visa environment in U.S. And recently,reports indicated 6.9% decline in Indian student enrollments,with numbers dropping to approximately 3.52 lakh by February 2026.
For Indian students especially,this can feel like another layer of uncertainty . Families spend huge money,students take loans,people plan careers years in advance,and then one immigration rule change can disturb everything.
And tbh,extra extension process may sound simple on paper,but anyone who has dealt with immigration paperwork knows how stressful it can get . Waiting,documents,fees,approval fear… all this while studying is not easy.
Education sector people are already worried that more paperwork and fixed limits may make some students think twice before choosing U.S . . And that question is hanging now,how many students will still take risk if rules keep getting tighter…
