This Trump-Meloni fight is sounding less like normal diplomacy and more like some personal argument spilling out in public . And honestly, when leaders start debating who asked for photo with whom,it becomes awkward for everyone watching .
US President Donald Trump publicly criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after claims around G7 summit held in Evian,France. Trump said Meloni repeatedly requested photo with him, something she found astonishing.
Then matter became more serious after Trump posted on Truth Social and accused her of undermining US efforts to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons . He also said her actions caused "great logistical inconvenience" for American military operations.
Meloni did not take this quietly only . In Instagram video, she said she was "frankly stunned" by his remarks and made it clear that neither she nor Italy would ever beg for anything, especially not from allies.
And tbh, this line says lot about how irritated she was.
Few things standing out in this whole mess:
- Military tensions over Iran have created rift between US and Italy .
- Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled scheduled trip to US .
- This adds to earlier public clashes, including Trump's remarks about Pope Leo XIV.
Meloni also hit back at Trump's style with allies, saying in effect that he is being harsh with friends while showing leniency towards enemies of the West and the US . That is not small thing ah,because this is not just photo drama anymore,it is about trust between allies.
Strangely, despite all this, both leaders were still seen talking at summit . Meloni later told reporters relationship remained unchanged and there were "no recriminations" between them .
But then Trump again stirred matter during phone interview with Italy's La7 TV,saying Meloni "begged" for photo and that he found it somewhat pitiable . That one comment alone was enough to keep controversy alive.
What makes this more interesting is that Meloni has actually been one of few European leaders with close relationship with Trump, and she even attended his inauguration in January 2025 . So if this equation is now cracking over Iran, allies, public insults and ego, then question is how much of that friendship was real in first place…
