This Trump-Meloni fight is honestly looking very messy now, especially because these two were recently acting like things were fine at G7 Summit in France . And then suddenly U.S. President Donald Trump comes out on June 20, 2026 saying Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni kept asking him for photo .
Trump’s claim was not small thing ah . He said Meloni wanted photograph with him to boost her popularity back home, especially after U.S . achieved a military victory over Iran. That kind of statement publicly aimed at ally is obviously going to create fire.
And Meloni did not take it quietly. She rejected his claim fully and said Trump’s assertions were entirely fabricated. In video posted on social media, she said,“Neither I nor Italy ever beg” ,and also questioned why U.S . President would behave like this with ally .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Meloni categorically denied Trump's assertion that she begged for a photo .
- Incident has led to heightened tensions in U.S.-Italy relations .
- Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has canceled a trip to U.S. in protest.
But matter did not stop there only. Trump then posted on his Truth Social platform and accused Meloni of mismanaging Italy’s relations with U.S . He also attacked her refusal to allow U.S. military to use Italian airfields, calling it major logistical problem from his side .
This also connects with Trump’s bigger anger toward NATO allies. He clearly feels they are not supporting U.S. military initiatives enough, and now Meloni seems to have become public target in that frustration.
What makes this more awkward is that Meloni had earlier tried to place herself like mediator between European leaders and Trump administration . She was not exactly anti-Trump figure publicly,so this sudden personal-style attack feels even more uncomfortable.
There was already tension earlier this year too, when Meloni defended Pope Leo XIV against Trump’s critiques over pontiff’s anti-war stance. Trump was reportedly disappointed with her response because he expected more support from her as ally .
And tbh, this whole thing shows how quickly diplomatic “friendship” can become public insult match. One photo claim, one denial, one canceled visit, and now U.S.-Italy ties are looking shaky again…
Now question is whether this was just Trump being Trump in public,or whether there is deeper anger between Washington and Rome that was waiting to come out…
