This atemoya issue between Taiwan and China may sound like simple fruit trade at first,but honestly,it feels much bigger than that . When agriculture ministry itself starts warning farmers about economic trap,then matter is not small ah.
Taiwanese agriculture ministry has warned local farmers after China said it wants to boost imports of atemoya,hybrid custard apple which is considered specialty of Taiwan's Taitung County . This fruit is known for creamy texture and unique flavor,but now it has somehow become caught inside China-Taiwan tension.
Earlier this month,China pledged to increase purchases of atemoyas . On paper,it may look like good news for farmers because more buyers means more income . But Taiwanese officials are clearly not comfortable with it .
And their fear is simple: first China buys more,then local farmers become dependent,and later restrictions come suddenly . Ministry called it classic Beijing "raise,trap, kill" approach,which sounds dramatic but Taiwan has seen similar pattern before .
Big worries here are pretty clear:
- Beijing's strategy raises alarms — Taiwan fears economic reliance will lead to instability.
- Past incidents inform current concerns — previous bans on Taiwanese produce highlight risks.
- Local industry threatened by competition — China's expansion of atemoya cultivation poses challenge .
The pineapple example from 2021 is exactly why Taiwan is worried rn . China banned pineapple imports from Taiwan that year,and it created major disruption for local farmers . After that,Taiwan had to push domestic consumption strongly just to support growers.
Recent atemoya export discussion started at trade forum in Xiamen,where Chinese companies said they wanted to buy more Taiwanese fruits . But this apparent goodwill is being looked at with suspicion because officials fear it may come before unilateral market restrictions later.
Agriculture ministry is now talking about sustainable development,income stability for farmers,and also diversification in atemoya processing . Basically,don’t put all hopes in one market only,because if that market closes suddenly,farmers are left exposed.
But politics has entered full scene too . Opposition lawmakers are accusing government of politicizing atemoya issue,and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an criticized officials for handling of situation, saying focus should be on supporting farmers instead of creating more political friction.
And that is where whole thing becomes tricky . Farmers need buyers,government fears dependency,China is expanding cultivation,and cross-strait politics keeps sitting in middle of everything… so where exactly does one fruit industry go from here…
