This Balagere incident is honestly very disturbing, because one engineer has already lost his life and another worker is still missing inside sewage treatment plant setup . These are not normal worksite risks ah,this is dangerous environment where one mistake can turn fatal very fast.
Body of Agilan Mohan,a supervising engineer, was recovered early on June 20 after he fell into STP tank in Balagere, near Varthur . Retrieval happened around 3:50 AM during rescue operation involving National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local fire services.
Mohan was reportedly doing maintenance work at Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) facility when incident happened . And now rescue teams are still trying to locate Brijesh Kumar,a worker from Bihar, who has been unaccounted for since Thursday evening.
Initial reports say three workers had entered 40-foot-deep wet well for cleaning work . Only one person managed to come out and raise alarm . Just reading that part itself feels scary, because inside such space, visibility, toxic gases and panic can trap people within seconds only .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Agilan Mohan's body was recovered around 3:50 AM on June 20.
- Search for Brijesh Kumar is still facing heavy rainfall, poor visibility and toxic gases.
- Varthur Police have registered case against contractor for not following safety protocols .
And tbh, this is where anger also comes in . Because sewage treatment plant maintenance is not some casual job where workers can be sent in without proper safety systems. If safety guidelines were ignored, then this was not just accident,it was failure at many levels .
Search operations were also suspended temporarily because weather conditions became bad . Heavy rainfall and toxic gases inside facility have made things even more difficult for rescuers . At same time, family of missing worker must be waiting without any clear answer, which is unbearable.
Karnataka government has announced ₹10 lakh compensation for Agilan Mohan's family . That support matters, but no amount can undo what happened . Investigators are now looking at possible violations of BWSSB safety guidelines by contractor,VA Tech Wabag, based in Chennai.
And now big question is whether this investigation will actually fix anything on ground . Because every time such incident happens, there is promise of strict inquiry, safety review, action against contractor… but workers still keep entering these hazardous spaces with huge risk hanging over them…
So while search for Brijesh Kumar continues, one uncomfortable thought stays there — how many such maintenance jobs are happening right now without anyone checking if basic safety is really being followed…
