This naval commissioning in Kolkata honestly feels like one of those moments where defense news may sound technical,but actually it says lot about where India is trying to go . On June 21,2026,Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over commissioning of three indigenously-built naval ships at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata .
And these were not some small additions also . The ships commissioned were stealth frigate Dunagiri,survey vessel (large) Sanshodhak,and anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft Agray . Different roles,different needs,but all connected to one bigger point,India wants stronger presence at sea .
During ceremony,Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about how these ships will help enhance India’s maritime security . He also said Indian Navy has major role in protecting nation's interests in Indian Ocean region . And tbh,with all kind of maritime pressure around region,this point does not feel exaggerated.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Indigenous content exceeding 75% shows India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing .
- Collaboration with over 200 MSMEs shows small and medium enterprises are also part of defense projects .
- Designed by Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau shows technical expertise of Indian naval engineers.
But what makes this more interesting is how much of this work happened within country only . These ships were designed by Warship Design Bureau of Indian Navy and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd,a Kolkata-based defense public sector undertaking.
And involvement of more than 200 micro,small,and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is not small thing ah . Defense manufacturing is usually seen as big-company space,but here smaller industries also had role in building something that will actually serve Indian Navy .
The event was attended by West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi,Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari,and Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan . That kind of presence also shows how commissioning was not just naval routine,but state and national level moment.
At same time,real test for Dunagiri,Sanshodhak,and Agray will begin after ceremony lights are gone . With rising maritime challenges,these vessels are expected to improve operational readiness and support India’s security interests at sea.
And honestly,this is where bigger question starts . India is clearly pushing harder on naval strength and defense manufacturing,but how fast can this momentum continue when pressure in Indian Ocean region keeps increasing…
