On June 22, 2026,older athletes across India are increasingly taking up marathons and competitive sports, and somewhere,it is breaking that old idea that fitness belongs only to young people.
For long time, sports were seen like youth thing only . Once people crossed certain age, society expected them to slow down, rest more and avoid “risk” . But now, older adults are showing up at events like Tata Mumbai Marathon, training properly, competing regularly and proving that sixties and seventies are not end of active life.
And honestly, this shift is not small thing ah .
India has over 150 million individuals aged 55 and above, and health side of exercise is already well known . Regular physical activity can reduce risk of heart disease, improve bone strength and also help mental health . But many older athletes seem to be saying something more emotional also — it is not just about medical benefits,it is about feeling alive again.
Few things standing out clearly in this movement:
- Community and Belonging gives older athletes friendships, support and new identity after retirement.
- Personal Achievements through marathons help them set goals and feel real accomplishment.
- Inspiring Figures like Kishori K and Kranti S show that older adults can still excel in sports.
Kishori K,a Mumbai resident,is one such name leading this change . She started running at 60 and has completed many races, including marathons . Her words really say whole thing: “Marathon running has changed my life. I started at 60 and,at 69,I am still running strong.”
Then there is Kranti S,who has participated in 24 marathons worldwide and earned multiple Guinness World Records for her achievements . That is not just fitness story,it is mindset story also . Because imagine starting or continuing at that level when many people around same age are told to just sit quietly and “take rest”.
At same time, programs like WalkAbout Athlete Program are trying to give older athletes national platform and recognition . This matters because many such people are doing amazing things quietly, without much spotlight, and their stories can push others to at least take first step.
But bigger question is still sitting there… if so many older adults can rebuild health, confidence and community through sports, why are we still treating ageing like full stop instead of another starting line…
